The Story of BOCO Boutique Hotel

For centuries, the house located in one of the prettiest streets of this historical walled town, that is now BOCO Boutique Hotel, has stood at the heart of Bormla, carrying with it the lives, joys, and struggles of countless families. The first records of the site go back as far as 1649, but it was in 1903 that Salvatore Gauci built the townhouse that still stands today.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the house changed hands several times. It became home to priests, professionals, and politicians — among them Judge Dr Eric Parnis, elected Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1927. Later, in the 1930s, the Tabone family filled the house with life, and during this period foremost local artist Abram Gatt was commissioned with the ceiling frescoes, still adorning the house. After the war, when much of Cottonera lay in ruins, the property became a refuge: up to 60 members of the extended Tabone family are said to have crowded within its walls.

From 1956 to 1973, the house was the beloved home of Judge Dr Oliver Gulia and his family. It was Judge Gulia who affectionately named it “The Spiral” after its beautiful spiral staircases. Many Bormliżi still remember it by that name. One of his sons, Gavin, was born in the house, and served as chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority for a number of years.

The Ebejer family took over in 1974, and for 35 years the house continued to be lived in as a family home.

Then, in 2010, it passed into new hands — those of Tony Busuttil.

The Birth of BOCO

With vision and care, the long transformation began. Under the guidance of a foremost Maltese architect & lawyer, the house underwent a painstaking restoration between 2015 and 2017. During this time, hidden treasures were revealed: original frescoes emerged from beneath old plaster, traditional Maltese tiles were salvaged and re-laid, and the elegant features of the townhouse were preserved. At the same time, modern comforts were woven in — a large lift, solar panels, new services, and contemporary design touches — blending history with function.

In 2016, the name BOCO® was chosen, honouring the city’s journey from the old BOrmla to the proud COspicua. And in April 2017, after three nights of opening celebrations over Easter week, BOCO Boutique Hotel welcomed its first guests.

Challenges and Renewal

Like many in the hospitality industry, BOCO faced the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, when travel came to a standstill. But this pause became an opportunity: a striking panoramic balcony was designed and built, further enhancing the hotel’s unique charm. By 2022, and more so in 2023, guests were again returning, and the house came back to life with renewed energy.

Today

From its origins in the 17th century, through generations of priests, judges, families, and visionaries, this house has been a home in many forms. Today, as BOCO Boutique Hotel, it has welcomed thousands of guests from all over the world. With more than a thousand glowing reviews, BOCO is now recognised as one of Malta’s most distinctive boutique hotels — a place where history, creativity, and hospitality meet.

We await you with open arms.
